Rotary Learning AcademyThe Learning Academy program is designed to stimulate interest in acquiring more knowledge about Rotary. Newer Rotarians, who want to gather more information as part of their orientation to Rotary, will find this program extremely beneficial. It will also provide training to Rotarians who would like to assume positions of responsibility and leadership at either the Club or the District level. In general, Rotarians will learn more about Rotary both locally and internationally with a focus on Foundation, Membership, Community Service, Administration, and Public Relations (Image). For five consecutive months, each month will focus specifically on one of the areas with questions comprised of true and false, fill in the blanks, and multiple choice answers. You will have a month to complete the module and send it back electronically. The modules will be emailed to you by the Dean of the Academy. Some Clubs in our District are having fellowship events once a month and working on the modules together. The information is basic to Rotary. Advanced Rotary education and leadership training is found under "The Rotary Leadership Institute." This summer’s Learning Academy program will begin mid-August 2016 and finish at the end of December 2016. Certificates of successful completion will be delivered to the graduates. There is no registration fee for the program as all communication is via the Internet. The Rotary International website, the District 7010 website and Google are excellent resources, as are experienced Rotarians. What’s New! This semester modules will also include PDFs of information to reference. If you were enrolled in the Learning Academy previously, and were unable to complete all of the modules, you can enroll and pick up the modules that you need to finish. We would love to have you complete your Learning Academy program! Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. You will find the application as a pdf or Word doc: Please return completed applications by August 15th 2016 to: info@creativetype.ca Janet Morozuk

African Literacy Project - Barrie (April 17 & 18 2015)Hello Everyone!
Thank you for your contribution and effort for this weekend in making this event a true success. With everyone’s full attention and contribution we were able to have the container FULL of equipment and books embark on its journey to Sierre Leone Africa to assist and provide a better environment for learning and developing for the future. Our goal has been met for this our second container and so a big THANK YOU to everyone from the Simcoe County Board of Education, Rotary Club of Collingwood, Rotary Club of Alliston, Rotary Club of South Georgian Bay, Rotaract Club of South Georgian Bay, Rotary Club of Innisfil, Rotary Club of Barrie-Huronia, Rotary Club of Barrie, YMCA Collingwood and YMCA Barrie.
The container is planned to begin its journey on April 19, 2015 when picked up and will be driven to Montreal and loaded on a ship to Antwerp Belgium followed by Morocco and then onto Sierre Leone with an arrival date of June 25, 2015. We will have photos for the arrival and the unloading as this is the first container being sent to this region there will be much celebration and joy brought to those who currently have little to assist in their education.
With the assistance of some eighty-eight volunteers over the two days we were able to have all the following goods packed into the shipping container without incident. We are now much better positioned for future activities with the organization of remaining equipment being sorted and arrange at Prince of Wales School so any additional pieces will be added in the same areas making access in the future much easier.
A special thank you to those who were able make our tasks were made much easier with donations of equipment from Rockbrune Movers, Barrie and Saunders Book Company, Collingwood. Lunch on Saturday and refreshments were provided by YMCA of Simcoe and Muskoka.
We expect to have photos of our event that we will post onto our website; when this has been completed I will send everyone the link so you can review at you leisure or download for you album. Our plan is to receive from Sierre Leone photographs when the container reaches its destination on or about June 25, 2015 these will also be posted when we have them and you can return and view.

Polio - We are Really This Close!Polio End-Game Plan Announced at Rotary International Conference
Collingwood - Local residents Pamela Hillier and Martin Oosterveld were two of more than 18,000 Rotarians from around the world recently attending the 2014 Rotary International Conference held on June 1-4 in Sydney, Australia.
Hillier and Oosterveld, Presidents for each of the two Rotary clubs based in Collingwood as of July 1, were eager to share some of the major announcements about the global fight to end polio they heard at the conference.
Dr. Bruce Aylward, a Canadian physician who heads the global effort for the World Health Organization, stated that of the three remaining polio endemic countries in the world, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, one country is very close to elimination and plans are in place to end the eradication task by 2018.
In Nigeria there have only been three new cases since the start of the year. Earlier this year India and all of South East Asia announced they were polio-free and that means that 80% of all children in the world are now born in polio-free countries.
The remaining countries where the virus is still endemic are Pakistan and Afghanistan. The frustrating resistance to vaccination in the tribal border region between these countries is being worn down systematically. While there is concern about some secondary outbreaks in countries such as Syria, Dr. Aylward indicated that with an immediate massive effort these flair-ups can be controlled quickly.
Aylward announced a new strategy has been developed from recent experience that will be used in the next few years. When the secondary flair ups started, they were very concerned that the virus might find a new foothold in Somalia -- with a failed government and very dangerous conditions for vaccine distribution, this could be a major setback in the overall battle.
To avert the problem they set up controls at all the border points in and out of Somalia and vaccinated every person who crossed who could not prove they had previously been vaccinated. This new strategy of total containment worked very well and will now be deployed in all the other endemic and flare up situations. So while it may be very difficult to go into every home and community in the lawless and war torn areas of the world, this new strategy makes sure the virus cannot spread to surrounding areas.
The fight to end polio is not cheap, with an estimated $5.5 billion dollars required over the next five years. Several major funding announcements for the Polio campaign were made at the conference.
Rotary International announced it will be contributing $35 million a year for the next five years, and a new agreement with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will see matching Rotary’s contributions two to one. These two annual contributions result in $105 million dollars.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot attending the conference with his father, also a Rotarian, announced the Australian Government would be contributing $100 million over the next 5 years. Also at the event a Rotary member from Nigeria, Sir Emaka Offor, announced a personal donation of $1 million and free office space for the Nigerian effort for as long as required.
There are 34,282 Rotary Clubs and over 1.2 million members worldwide. The two Collingwood-based clubs will continue their efforts to support international, regional and local projects through fundraising and volunteer service. Combined the two clubs raise more than $200,000 each year and have almost 100 members. New members are always welcome.
If you have bought a Rotary calendar, a Trip of the Month ticket, or attended the Scotch Nosing & Noshing or the Taste of the Town events – you are supporting the work of Rotary in your community and beyond.
For more information about the polio campaign visit www.endpolio.org and to find out about becoming a member visit one of the local clubs at www.rotarycollingwood.org or www.rotarycollingwoodsgb.org.
